How do I handle bullying?

"How do I handle bullying?"

That is a question that I found myself asking constantly. Looking back at my situation I believe I was able to handle my bully in the safest and quickest way possible. One thing that does not really get touched on is the mental toll after because for me that was the worst part.

The first thing you need to know is that you are not alone. That was something I did not believe in at the time. I thought I wasn't going to be able to trust anyone, that I was by myself no one would want to help me. In the end I was so wrong, I had people who wanted to help me and listen to how I was feeling. One person may be against you, but I promise you have a whole team that will back you up!

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM BEING BULLIED?

Here are some questions to ask yourself...

Do peers make mean comments about you?

Have you been called hurtful names?

Are you teased on how you look?

Do you feel alone at school?

Has someone spread rumors about you?

Are you purposely excluded from a group?

Do you feel like someone is trying to control you?

Are you ever afraid to go to school?

If you have said yes to majority of these things then yes, you are being bullied!

I AM BEING BULLIED WHAT NOW?

The bully thrives when the targets are silent, that is because their behavior can continue without consequences. You might want to just isolate yourself from peers and family because it may be too painful or embarrassing to talk about. As difficult as it’s connecting with someone and sharing what is going on is so important. If you don’t feel comfortable telling an adult, start by talking to a friend with the end goal of being able to talk to an adult about it. When you speak to an adult you are able to quickly put an end to it since adults hold authority.

Tell the bully to stop, speak up. When you stand up against the bully, they don’t expect it since they think they hold the power. Kill them with kindness, when you turn around and be super nice to them it will put them in shock. Continue to do this until the situation calms down if it still continues make sure an adult is helping put an end to it.

Create a plan with an adult or friend on the safest and quickest way to end the bullying. I know for me I removed my bully on all social media accounts so that they could no longer have a way to contact me. When you have a plan, it helps you target the situation in the fullest potential and helps you think of all the possible outcomes.
