Pacer's National Bullying Prevention Center made that the theme of Unity Day last October. In today's headlines we can see how important it is to truly unite together! In this article I wanted to talk about not only the importance of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion but also what that truly looks like.
KINDNESS
Definition: the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.
Being kind to someone has so many benefits behind it and that is something I believe we can all agree on. When there is kindness it improves the quality of life for yourself but even the community! Not only does it make you feel amazing it also helps unify everyone together. Everyone has different opinions and beliefs on things and we need to make sure we all listen and respect it. Imagine if we all had the same opinions and beliefs on things we wouldn't be able to learn and grow from each other. At the end of the day we all want respect but the only way we can gain respect is if we respect each other.
Whats the difference between being kind v. being nice?!
I once was asked this and it made me think for a second and after a lot of thinking and researching I discovered this quote...
Kindness emerges from someone who's confident, compassionate and comfortable with themselves. A kind person is loving and giving out of the goodness of their heart. At the root of extreme niceness, however, are feelings of inadequacy and the need to get approval and validation from others!
This one stuck with me and couldn't be said any better! I also see being nice when you are polite and at times it can just be the politically correct thing to do.While being kind is when you do something from your heart and genuinely mean it! While being nice will make you feel good being kind is more of a act of doing good. Some may even say that being nice is just to make you "look" good and you are just going through the motions. When you do things to be kind you typically do not expect anything in return.

ACCEPTANCE
Definition:the action or process of being received as adequate or suitable, typically to be admitted into a group.
Most of us have been the new kid to a school, and I think it is safe to say that its a nerve racking experience. You have no clue where to go, you don't have any friends yet, and your worried that you wont ever be accepted. Then someone saves the day and comforts you and becomes your friend and helps show you around and makes you feel safe. Now imagine if no one would of acceptance you, do you think you would of had a good time? No, that is why it is so important that we reach out to people and let them know they are not alone and that they are welcomed!
Why is Acceptance important?
Today we can see that a change needs to happen but in order for this change to happen we need to teach the mind to see and realize the importance of change. Which requires the acceptance that there is a problem and that the change is necessary. When we accept and realize that things need to be changed and then do something then there are typically positive outcomes and more happiness will come out of it. For example, acceptance is a huge thing our world is struggling with today. As soon as we figure out how to not judge someone on the outside but what is on the inside then we will all being to accept each other!

INCLUSION
Definition:the action or state of including or of being included within a group or structure.
When you are included into a group of people you feel happy, and loved. Now think of a time when you have been pushed out of a group on purpose how did that make you feel? Not good right.... That is why no matter someones skin color, sexuality, religion, or ethnicity we all ACCEPT each other. I think it amazing that there are so many differences in the world because it brings so many learning opportunities into our lives. When your not welcomed into something it will bring down not only your self-esteem, but also motivation.
Why is Inclusion important?
When you practice inclusion specially in classrooms the environment becomes 10 times more positive, but also more productive. Everyone is able to use their voice and state ideas that could end up being super beneficial to project. Practicing inclusion truly does come from a classroom since there are so many things that goes down in one. That is why it's so important that not only parents but educator teach and show students the importance of inclusion.
